Your brain and body can only handle feeling overworked for so long. Burnout is a real thing, I am sure we have all felt the symptoms at times often without realising it. If you consistently experience high levels of stress without taking steps to manage or reduce it, it manifests in ways that can be detrimental to your health and wellbeing. The tricky thing about burnout is that the signs are very gradual and we often overlook them as we are busy being busy.
What are the signs to look out for?
- Unexplained muscle tension, pain, fatigue
- Frustration & irritability
- Struggling with relationships
- A diminished pride in your work and lack of attention
- Diminished productivity
- Losing sight of your goals
- Difficulty concentrating
- Forgetfulness
- Emotional outbursts that you find difficult to process
- Difficulty sleeping
- Physical ailments like high blood pressure, heart disease & vulnerability to other illnesses
The most common kind of burnout identified in this generation is job burnout. While this is a common cause this type of exhaustion is not exclusively the only cause for burnout. Fatigue as a carer is very real; students under high pressure suffer it as well. I am sure you have your own applications. The tips mentioned to assist with any type of burnout can be adapted to your unique scenario. If burnout symptoms are ignored or unaddressed it can lead to significant consequences. Long hours, heavy workloads and the feeling that you have little control or help with the responsibilities that you are dealing with.
How can one handle burnout?
- Evaluate your options
- Seek support
- Try a relaxing activity that suits you
- Introduce some exercise
- Try to take some naps and go to bed earlier
- Practise mindfulness
Here is a positive mantra to consider if you are struggling in this way. Ask yourself:
“As I watch my life unfold around me I can choose to resist or I can choose to flow with it? I am uniquely equipped to intuitively trust my gut and make some changes if necessary.”
